Jim Sturgess Gets Dangerous in â50 Dead Men Walkingâ
Article from homemediamagazine.com:
Jim Sturgess has been able to quietly descend into Hollywood while retaining a certain underground cool. Heâs taken lead roles in such Hollywood films as 21 and Across the Universe, but the versatile actor doesnât want to take the easy way out. His latest film, 50 Dead Men Walking, occasionally put him in danger as he played real-life Irish operative for the British police, embedded in the IRA, Martin McGartland.
âI wanted to do something more gritty. I think in acting youâre given the ability to do that, to go from the bright lights of Vegas to the gritty streets of Belfast,â he said, referring to the settings of 21 and 50 Dead Men Walking, respectively. âAs far as my job was concerned, it was exactly the same [as a bigger Hollywood film] â acting is sort of acting no matter whoâs filming. When the film came out, it was another sort of drive and passion to get people to go and see it because I genuinely think itâs a great film. And itâs hard when it doesnât get the attention that some of the films with more of the machine behind it get.â Read the rest of this entry »

Jim On âFifty Dead Men Walkingâ
What drew you to playing Martin?
As a young guy, his life was a real roller coaster, and I was very attracted to the fact that he was a flawed person. He wasnât all out a good or bad guy, and I was intrigued with discovering why he acted the way he did.
During the Irish âtroubles,â you were basically still a kid. Did you remember a lot of details from the era, or did you have to do a lot of research?
I grew up in England in the 80s and I just remember associating that period with bombs going off â that was basically all I knew of it. So it was really interesting for me to be able to go off to Belfast, where the film was shot, and see what everything was all about.

Jim Sturgess Tells All!
British actor Jim Sturgess broke onto these shores with the one-two punch of starring in two high-profile studio movies, Julie Taymor’s Beatles musical Across the Universe and the Vegas blackjack thriller 21, the latter a huge breakout hit.
It might have been surprising to some when he chose to next tackle a much lower budgeted indie project, that being Canadian filmmaker Kari Skogland’s Irish thriller Fifty Dead Men Walking (watch exclusive Red Band trailer). In the real-life thriller, Sturgess plays Martin McGartland, a street hustler in Belfast who was recruited by British Intelligence to infiltrate the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in order to help prevent more deaths on both sides of the bloody war. Sir Ben Kingsley plays “Fergus,” the agent who brings Martin on as an informer, and the two actors offer a lot of high points to the movie whenever they’re on screen together.

âDead Menâ Helps Jim Move Across The Universe From Cute To Crafty
Jim Sturgess? Isnât he that cute guy from âAcross the Universeâ and â21?â
Sturgess hopes to change those first impressions with his new role in the gritty fact-based thriller âFifty Dead Men Walking,â which opens Friday. He plays Martin McGartland, an Irish Republican Army turncoat/British undercover agent in 1970s Belfast.
Playing Jude in the offbeat Beatles musical âAcross the Universeâ gave Sturgess his first career break, one that labeled him as cute and sexy.

Jim Hopes Spider-Man Musical Works Out
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE star JIM STURGESS has his fingers crossed for the struggling SPIDER-MAN musical – because he was involved in the project at the beginning and insists it will be a great show.
The Brit has long been the favourite to play director Julie Taymor’s superhero, opposite his Across The Universe co-star Evan Rachel Wood, but he insists he won’t be suiting up to belt out songs composed by U2’s The Edge and Bono – but he’d still love to see the production.
He says, “I was never involved. I did a workshop to help out but I was never involved in the final production. It would be unfortunate if it doesn’t work out.”
Producers insist the show will go on, despite financial issues, but reports suggest Wood is looking for film work after being released from her Spider-Man contract.
